There are definitely people who know about this test and have probably even done it already.

But there are also plenty of people who will hear about it for the first time.

❓What’s the point of this test in general?

Even though flowers in Cali strains are often super resinous, that still doesn’t automatically mean they’re suitable for Iceolator extraction.

🧐 Buds can look insanely frosty from the leaf tips down to the stem, but still give you very little resin when you wash them.

The jar test is done with a small amount of flower before you start a full wash (Iceolator) to figure out if it’s actually worth making Iceolator from this strain.

For example, many of our strains have already passed this test, and the best results were from đŸ„­Fruit Gum, 🍇Grapes, 🍭Candy House, 🍾Schweppez, 🍏Apple Fritter

The jar test shows not only the potential yield from the chosen strain, but also the quality of the future material.

đŸ«™Jar Test / INSTRUCTIONS.

Alright. For the test we need a clear glass jar with a lid, about 1 liter in volume (anything from 800–1500 ml will do).

The jar has to be both transparent and colorless! Don’t use blue or greenish glass — it’s hard to see the trichomes through it.

We also need water that is as ☃ cold as possible. Practically “one second” before freezing.
I’d recommend putting the jar filled with water in the freezer ❄ (with the lid off) and waiting until it gets as cold as possible but without forming ice.
Then drop a few 🧊ice cubes into the jar and shake it. If the ice melts quickly, the water isn’t cold enough yet.

A laser thermometer will answer this question much faster.

Basically, you want the temperature as close as possible to t: +0°C.


đŸŒčFresh flowers:

If you want to make live Iceolator, or in other words Piatella, then you’ll need freshly cut flowers.

Fresh buds are heavy, so for the test you’ll need about 20 g of fresh (not dried) flowers per 1-liter jar.

đŸ„€Dry flowers:

For the test, you only need 7 g of dry flowers per 1-liter jar.
But in reality that’s roughly the same amount of buds, because after drying, 20 g of fresh flowers turn into about 7 g of dry. Approximately.

⏳ Unlike fresh flowers, dry buds need to sit in the jar with water (in the fridge) for 10–15 minutes so the dry plant matter soaks up water and doesn’t crumble into tiny shards that will ruin the quality of the product.


After that, the process is the same for both dry and fresh flowers!

đŸŒȘShake the jar with water and buds for about 10 minutes.
Basically, just shake the jar — but not only up and down. Flip it back and forth with a fairly fast tempo.

After shaking, put the jar back in the fridge for another 10 minutes so all the resin sinks to the bottom and the flowers float on top.

🔬Analyzing the test:

1ïžâƒŁ Quality!

First, we evaluate the quality of the product. As many intact trichomes as possible should settle at the bottom of the jar. Not only the round trichome heads, but also the stalk.
The more of these full trichomes you see, the better!
It’s also important to pay attention to contamination: there shouldn’t be a lot of trash in the sediment, which is easy to spot by green specks in the sediment and by the general color — it should be as light and as clear as possible.
Green cloudiness at the bottom means either you didn’t pre-soak the dry flowers and a lot of broken plant material (leaf bits, etc.) got in there, or the flowers themselves are giving a poor result.

2ïžâƒŁ Quantity!

A good result is considered 5–10% extract from dry material and 3–7% from fresh.
If your numbers are higher — that’s absolutely fantastic!

Loose, airy buds usually give better results in terms of final yield. Dense, rock-hard buds often can’t release trichomes that are locked deep inside the tight nugs.
Dense flowers are better suited for pressing, not for water extraction.
