Limonene is the second most common terpene in cannabis and the most recognisable by nose: it is the smell of freshly stripped citrus peel. The same molecule gives lemons and oranges their aroma and is used industrially as a solvent and fragrance. It boils at around 176 °C. It almost never appears alone in a terpene profile: in citrus-forward cultivars it usually sits alongside caryophyllene, producing a zest-plus-pepper pairing. For breeding, limonene is convenient because it is distinguishable by nose during flowering, long before lab analysis — phenotypes get selected on it by hand.
